Everyone remembers that brilliant used car commercial from Monday, right? The one where the 96 Maxima is touted as a "stunning tour de force"?
Well the director of social media marketing for Nissan North America took notice of the ad, and then did this...
The owner had lowered the price on his craigslist ad to $900, but Nissan offered him his original asking price of $1400 and then also threw in $1000 to a charity of the owners choice.
This is how you win at social media marketing.

Nice! That's some serious advertising money well spent on Nissan's behalf.

Indeed. $2400 to raise their image in the eye of the volatile social media world? That's a steal.

Now restore the car to Concurs condition and give it back to the seller.

That is fantastic.

They should give whoever directed/shot the video a job in marketing. They did a great job of capturing the SOUL of the car!

Awesome. Well done, Nissan. Bravo. Now if the dealer I bought my Frontier from would only stop calling me and asking me to buy it back.

Good guy Nissan

$900 for a pos maxima? what the fuck? even in our overpriced quebec market you can find mint ones for $500... floridians are retarded

That IS his day job.

It would be wise if nissan were to put him in a new one. But, wisdom is not commonly found in the realm of automakers.

You can buy good will, by sponsoring things like this.

You money has more buying power silly Canadians.

Who played their marketing cards better, seller or buyer?

Serious advertising yes. Serious money? Nissan spends more waxing one of its floor babes for an auto show. Brilliant and incredibly economical advertising is what it is.

I didn't mean to imply that 2.4 kilobucks was a lot of dough for Nissan, but that the spending of it was well done.

Yes.

For sure he made a better job than Nissan itself. Spending money is not equal to display creativity, humor, and reaching the public. You are right. He should have a job at filming, editing, and creating for any company who wants a working brain, not a dormant one.

+1 but as a bonus, put a GT-R engine in it :)

Really? Is it in demand in your area or does the owner want it for himself? I love those little trucks btw.

I meant that it was seriously well spent not that it was a serious amount of money. Which I already told TimF101.

As a recently new proud happy owner of a $1100 1996 Maxima I rather think he intends to drive it.

There's an old saying:
"Buy a man's car, feed him for a day. Give the man a job in brand marketing at Nissan, feed him for life."

Funny ad, but not good enough for a whole new car.

They may be in demand but they probably don't realize that it's a manual (which is why I got such a good deal on it in the first place) and I'm pretty sure their biggest motivation is to convince me to buy a new one from them...but I've moved about 5 hours away from that dealership since.

I got a great deal on my old Honda Element because it was a manual and it was sitting on the lot too long, gotta love it!

My truck sat for 3 months before I bought it when fuel prices skyrocketed in the summer of '08. Saved about 4 grand off sticker and about 7 grand less than a comparable Toyota.

The best $2400 any company has ever spent!

No, screw that, I hope they leave it crappy and install it in their US headquarters.

So now I'm looking for someone with video editing skills to help create an ad for my '02 Olds Intrigue, which is in much nicer shape than that Maxima, BTW. Then we'll post the ad on Twitter, wait for it to go viral, then sit by the phone and wait for Oldsmobile's call to buy the car back from me! Genius!!!!!

We did a similar thing in 2011 - our Get A Life Buy My Porsche project. The car went very quickly! http://jalopnik.com/5809434/how-to
